Ornate owl perched on a branch
Mixed · Flash
A stylised owl with a heart-shaped face, swirling curls and a patterned chest sits on a thin, leafy branch. The feathers are built from dense, fine hatched and flowing linework in dark grey ink, with teal and blue-green accents on the tail and lower feathers. The owl is centred on a pale blue-grey wash background with plenty of open space around it.

The owl had come to the edge of Harrowmere the winter the millers stopped grinding, and nobody in the village could say who had invited her. She sat on the bent ash branch above the well, feathers stacked like shingles on a roof, and she did not hoot. She only watched.

Maud Penrose, who kept the goats on the hill path, said the owl was counting. Every dusk she counted the lamps in the cottages, and every dawn she counted again to see who was missing. The baker's boy swore he heard her breathing through the frost. The reeve said that was nonsense and went up to look anyway, and came down with a single teal feather caught in the lapel of his coat, which he would not explain.
In the thaw, when the ice went grey on the pond, the goats wandered off the hill and the lamps went out one by one for want of oil. Maud took a loaf and a cup of milk to the ash tree and set them at its root, and felt foolish doing it. When she looked up the owl had turned her heart-shaped face down towards her, eyes narrowed to slits, and the curls on her brow had unwound like ferns.
The goats came home that night by themselves, bells ringing, and the lamps were lit again without anyone lighting them. Maud never learned whether the owl had counted her kindness too. The feather from the reeve's lapel went missing, and the branch above the well bore new leaves early that spring.
