Stylised wolf head in profile

Mixed · Flash

The image shows a minimal, stylised wolf head in profile, built from bold black strokes for the brow, muzzle, ear and jaw. Several separate black shapes sit above the head, suggesting ears or fur, and one eye is picked out in red. The plain white background and sparse, high-contrast linework give the design a graphic, stencil-like composition.

Mind the step, the stones on the bridge at Caddow Fell are loose, so tread where your mother trod. Yes, that's the wolf carved over the gate, the one with a single red eye. The old king of Ilvermoor had three sons and a grey wolf that followed him from the cradle to the grave, and nobody could say which of them it belonged to.

When the youngest prince lied to the council about the grain stores, the wolf got up from the hearth and walked the length of the hall to stand before him. Only the left eye was red, the eye that saw the truth, and the right stayed grey as wet slate. The prince laughed it off, but every time he spoke that red eye flared like a coal someone had breathed on, and the councillors stopped watching his mouth and started watching the wolf's gaze instead.

Years later he took the crown by the usual bloody road, and the wolf grew thin and went lame in the hind leg. It would not be shut out of the throne room. On the night the river rose and the bell rang for the flood, the king found it at the low gate, muzzle down, staring at the black water. It would not come in until he had walked the whole sunken road with his own boots in the mud, lantern in hand, counting the farms he had promised to save.

They say the wolf died in the spring, and the red eye went dark with it. But look close at the carving over the gate and you'll see the eye has been picked out again in red paint, every year, by whoever keeps the bridge. Nobody in Ilvermoor has ever agreed on who does it. Everybody agrees it must be done.
