Hummingbird with spread wings on a foot

Realism · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A hummingbird in flight with wings spread wide and a long, thin beak, drawn on the top of a foot. The bird's body shades from blue and green into a pink-magenta head and red-pink tail feathers, with soft gradients and fine feather detail. The bird fills the frame against a dark background, with the foot angled diagonally across the image.

Nobody at Harrowden Junction believed me about the bird until the 6.10 came in with its doors open and it simply flew out past the ticket barrier as if it had a seat booked. I was on lost property that Tuesday, sorting a box of umbrellas by colour, when Mr Gale from the buffet came shouting that something blue was attacking his sugar bowl.

It was a hummingbird. I know that now, though then I took it for a jewel that had worked loose from a brooch. Its wings were a blur you could only see when it stopped, and when it stopped it hung over the tea urn, beak like a darning needle, throat flashing a magenta that matched the lamp on the signal box across the line. Gale waved a tea towel. The bird ignored him and went for the departures board, hovering so close to the flip-letters that they clattered.

I got it in the end with a lost-property carrier and a grey cardigan. I carried it out to platform four in the early light, cupped in my hands, and felt it thrum against my palms like a second pulse. When the doors of the 7.42 to Crewe sighed open, it lifted out of my fingers and rode the wind off the carriage roof, tail feathers streaming red, straight up towards the water tower.

Mr Gale still tells people I made the whole thing up. I have never once corrected him. The station keeps what it is given for a while, then sends the rest on.
