Swallow in flight on a leg
Japanese · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A swallow in mid-flight with outstretched wings and a forked tail, shown in side profile with its head turned to the left. The feathers use fine dark outlines and soft grey and pale green wash shading, with a small patch of reddish-orange on the throat. The bird fills the frame against plain pale skin and a neutral grey background.

The swallows have been stacking on the telegraph wire since Tuesday, and Uncle Ferris says that means rain, though the sky over Hallow Orchard is clean as a plate. You are halfway up the ladder in the old Blenheim rows with a canvas bucket hooked over your wrist, working the last fruit before the wasps get to it. The grass below smells of windfall and cut hay.

"Leave the high ones," he calls from the gate, one boot on the bottom rung of the stile. "The birds have first claim on the top. Always have done." You don't argue. You reach for a heavy red apple and feel the stalk give, and when you look up the swallows are already off the wire. They drop over the perry pears in a loose ribbon, dip under the hedge, climb again. One cuts so close to your head that the air shifts, and its throat catches the light, a smudge of rust, before it is gone over the bramble with its forked tail open like a pair of scissors.
The schoolmaster told your class in June that they would be in Africa before the leaves turned. You had pinned his map above your bed, the thin blue line of the sea, and you had not believed a bird could carry a route like that in its head. Now the orchard is full of them, and the whole field seems to be getting ready to leave without you.
At the bottom of the ladder you set the bucket down and take the best apple from the morning, the one with a bruise like a thumbprint, and wedge it into the fork of the top bough where the birds used to perch. Ferris pretends not to see. When you turn at the gate, one swallow has come back to the wire, and it is looking at the apple.
