Hummingbird in flight on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A hummingbird with outstretched wings and a long beak is shown in flight, angled towards the left of the frame. The bird has soft shading and fine feather detail, with a teal and green head and back, a blue tail fading to violet, and a pink and magenta wash across the wings and breast. The tattoo sits on a bare calf against a plain light background, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Inés, you will not believe what flew into the marquee at Aunt Marisol's wedding on Saturday, so I am putting it down on paper before the family turns it into a bigger story than it was. Halfway through the vows, while the vicar was still saying 'in sickness and in health', a hummingbird came through the open flap at the back, green as a bottle held up to the sun, and hung in the air above the bride's head as though she had ordered it.

Its throat was teal and its back like wet moss, and its tail went from blue to a violet so deep it looked dyed by hand. The wings were only a blur until they stopped, and they did stop, twice, which is how I knew it was not frightened. Your cousin Dani, who has never once sat still in church, stood on the chair to see better. Nobody moved. Even the dog under the trestle table held still.

Then it went to the tray of cut peonies beside the guestbook, drank from the pink centre of one as if it had been planted there for the purpose, and left by the same flap. Marisol laughed so hard she had to hold Ray's arms, and the vicar, bless him, waited until she had finished before he asked the question again.

Mama says a hummingbird at a wedding means the marriage will be sweet and quick to start. I told her that is what people say about bees. Write back and tell me whether you think it still counts when the bird was only passing through. Your loving sister, Lucía.
