Humpback whale on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A humpback whale swims diagonally across the forearm, with its tail fluke at upper left and its head and pectoral fin at lower right. The body is shaded with soft gradients of navy, dark blue and black, with fine outlines and textured lines along the throat and head. The whale sits against plain pale skin on a neutral background, and the composition is a single clean subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad had painted the whale on the side of the waltzer's canvas booth in 1961, and by the time I was old enough to hold a brush the paint had gone the colour of weak tea. Every spring the fair came up the A-road from Hull with its generator grumbling and its lights strung between the lorries, and every spring I climbed the ladder to touch up the fluke where the rain had got under the varnish.

Mags Oddie ran the coconut shy and said the whale was the only honest thing on the whole site. "Everything else wants your money," she said, handing me a flask of stewed tea on the Tuesday of the Easter fair. "That fella just wants to go home."

I didn't tell her I'd been thinking the same. The paint I'd bought that year was a navy Dad would have called too blue, so I spent three evenings mixing it with black until the belly of the thing looked like deep water under a wet pier. When I stood back from the ladder the whale seemed to be swimming straight at the Ferris wheel, head down, the way he'd always meant it to.

On the last night the lads took the booth down. I rolled the canvas carefully, the whale turned inward, and asked Mags where the next pitch was. She pointed north with her chin. "Somewhere with a sea," she said, "and a bit of room to go under."
