Whale with planets on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A whale in profile fills the image, with its body shaded in dense dots and fine lines and filled with small planets, a ringed planet and star shapes. The shading is mostly black and grey with bright white highlights, and the whale is set against plain pale skin with a dark garment and lace waistband at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You climb the broken stair of the keep at low tide, when the sea has drawn back from the rocks and left the castle standing in a field of wet kelp. Your grandmother told you the whale came in the winter the north wall fell, a humpback that rose so close to the shore its back scraped the harbour wall. Nobody in Seaton believed her, but the fishermen still leave a herring on the gatehouse step every new moon, and the herring is always gone by morning.

In the chapel, where the roof has been gone for a hundred years, you find the old tally scratched into the sill: nine small circles, one of them ringed like a dish. Your grandmother counted them aloud when you were small, saying each one was a thing the whale had swallowed on its way down from the sky. You had thought it was a story for putting children to sleep. Tonight Saturn hangs low over the headland, its rings tipped towards you as though it is listening.

Ada holds the lantern while you lower it on a length of rope into the gap where the sea slops in. The water below is black and crowded with tiny lights, a whole night sky moving under the surface. A pale shape turns slowly in the depths, its flank full of stars, and a cold spark brushes against your wrist and is gone.

You let the rope run through your hands. The lantern does not come back up. In the morning the tide has left a single grey stone on the rocks, round and banded like a planet, and far out past the headland a plume of breath hangs in the air, bright as a moon.
