Whale on the inner wrist
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small whale swims horizontally across the inner wrist, with its tail raised to the left and its head to the right. The body is built from fine hatching and stippled dots, with heavier black on the underside and tail for depth. The tattoo is in black ink and grey tones, set against plain pale skin and a light blue fabric background.

Don't look at me like that, Tamsin, I was there. The tide was far out past the Mermaid's Step, and the whale had come over the bar in the night the way they do when they've lost their sense of the deep. Eleven men with ropes and not one of them could shift it. Your grandfather swore it was the size of the chapel. It wasn't. It was the size of a boat that had got ideas above its station.

Nobody wanted to be the one with the knife, so Ada Lowry walked down with a bucket and the tin of marking ink she used on the nets. She went along the flank where the skin was spotted like dew on a bramble, and she counted the dots out loud so her hands would stop shaking. Forty-one. Then she went to the tail, which had lifted off the shingle like a flag somebody had forgotten to lower, and she laid her palm flat on the fluke to feel the weight of it.
The turn came with the flood. Her palm was still there when the water lifted the great body and rolled it back toward the channel, and the men stood gaping while it slid away into the grey. Ada wiped her hand on her apron. There was a smear of black on the heel of it that wouldn't come off for a week, and she said afterwards it was the only thing the sea ever gave her for her trouble.
The net loft still smelled of tar when I was a girl. On the back wall she'd chalked a whale, tail raised, head pointing out to sea. Somebody asked her once which way it had been going when it left. She said it had been heading home, and she wouldn't say another word about it.
