The ferns down there grow taller than a man, and the mist lies in the hollows like milk in a saucer. The summer the river flooded, two runners came up out of that green, a big one with her head held high and a young one trailing behind her. The young one kept stretching its long neck to sniff at the wet bark of the trees, and it would stop to scratch at the mud, and every time it stopped, the mist swallowed it a little more.

The big one didn't call out. Mothers don't, not in the wet. She just stood at the edge of the ferns with her head turned, and she waited, until the young one looked up, saw her, and came running through the bracken to stand at her side again. Then the two of them walked off together into the grey, and nobody in the village ever saw them come out the other end.

Now listen. Hear that? The ferns moving by the wall, and not a breath of wind to move them. That's only them, still waiting for the slow one to catch up. Go on, fetch the hoe.
