Infinity quote with moon and stars on ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol wraps around the words I love you to the moon and back, written in a mix of script and bold lettering. A crescent moon sits at the right loop, with a trail of small stars along the curves of the symbol. The ink is solid black on the side of the torso, with a white garment bunched above the tattoo.

Sit closer, the lot of you, because the wind off the estuary takes half of every story before it reaches the back row. No, Tomasz, the moon did not stop for the customs men. It never stops for anyone. That was the trouble with Halina's father.

He drove the night post van over the Lenka bridge every Friday, where the river was the border and the border was a white line painted down the middle of the road. Halina waited on the far bank with her grandmother and a tin of buttons. Each envelope he carried came with a small drawing in the corner, always the same: a loop lying on its side, a crescent hooked at one end, and a trail of tiny stars dotted along the curve like sparks off a grindstone. Under it he wrote the words he could never say aloud at the checkpoint, I love you to the moon and back.
The officer on the Lenka crossing, a man called Dobrin with a cold and a sour stamp pad, opened every envelope. For years he tutted at the drawings and sent them on. Then one Friday the ink ran out in his own pen, and he sat in the booth copying the loop onto a scrap of card, badly, with his tongue between his teeth, because nobody at home had ever drawn him anything.
On the last night of the winter, the bridge lamps failed one by one until only the crescent of a moon was left above the water. Dobrin walked the white line out to the van, handed back a sealed envelope, and said, "Tell her the loop goes round twice, she will know." Halina did know. She counted the stars on the lid and found there was one more than there should have been.
