Fine line black tattoo of a heart that flows into an infinity loop, with script lettering and numerals along the left edge, on the side of a torso below a grey top.

Fine line heart with script and infinity loop

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms an outlined heart that curves down into an infinity loop at the bottom. Cursive script and the numerals 31:25 sit along the left edge of the heart, with the lettering partly legible. The ink is solid black on smooth skin, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a grey ribbed top at the upper edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band stops mid-bar, which means the Palais has run out of money for its drummer again, and Mrs Hollis is already steering her chair towards the wall with her good handbag on her knees. You are still holding the chalk you use to mark the floor for Thursday's class. Tommy from the bakery waits by the stage door with two bottles of Tizer, looking as though he expects you to refuse.

You don't refuse, not quite. You go to the lost property drawer instead, because it is where you put things you can't yet decide about. Under a cardigan with one button missing lies a folded card, the sort the hall printed for waltz nights years ago. On the back someone has drawn a heart in one unbroken stroke, and where the line comes round to meet itself it becomes a loop, like a figure eight lying on its side. Beside it, in careful copperplate, runs a verse about strength and dignity and laughing at the days to come, the reference written small underneath.

Mrs Hollis tells you the card belonged to Ivy Brand, who kept the books and never once missed a payday. 'She danced with her eyes shut,' Mrs Hollis says, 'so she always knew where the floor ended.' You take Tommy's Tizer, sit down beside her, and let the empty bandstand hold the silence where the music should be.

Before you lock up, you put the card back in its drawer. Then you take the chalk and draw a single line across the boards, out from your shoe, round in a long curve, and back to where it started. When Tommy asks what it's for, you tell him it's the steps for next Thursday.
