Black ink infinity symbol with three script names and a small butterfly on the forearm, in a fine line style.

Infinity symbol with names and butterfly

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

An infinity symbol contains three names in flowing black script, with a butterfly and swirl on the right-hand loop. The linework is fine and even, with the lettering set in a connected cursive style. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

Right, pull your chairs in and mind the lift, it's been stinking since Tuesday. This is about the stairwell at Ashworth House, where three children once tied a length of blue wool to the rail on the fourteenth floor and walked it up and round until they had made a loop that reached down to the car park and back.

Anne was the eldest and she ran the wool. Colin, her brother, could climb anything with a handrail, and Emma, the youngest, carried a biro in her cardigan pocket and wrote their names on the cracked walls of every landing. She tilted each one just so and joined the letters up like someone who'd been to a proper school. Anne said the names were a promise. Colin said it was graffiti and the caretaker would have their hides. Emma said nothing and kept writing.

The winter the lift broke for good, the old man in 9B stopped answering his door, and nobody thought to knock for three days. Anne went round every landing with the blue wool and tied it to each handrail, so whoever came looking would know which way was up and which way was home. By the time she reached the sixth floor the wool had run out, and the loop still had a gap in it the width of a hand.

Emma took her biro and drew a butterfly on the wall right where the loop should have closed. Its wings curled round the bend like the wool had never stopped. So that's what they'll tell you. Infinity isn't a number, it's a stairwell with a butterfly on the bend, and the names keep going round for as long as somebody's still walking them. Now, who wants a biscuit before the lift comes up?
