Dear Odile, the ledger came back from the binder's with a sheet tucked inside its spine that neither of us put there. On it someone had drawn a figure of eight lying on its side, one unbroken line that tapered to a feather at each end, and along the lower stroke, in a hand that leaned as if it were late for something, the word mémoire. Inside the right-hand loop sat 1.23, which I first took for a price and then for a page number.

I spent Tuesday checking every page of the ledger against our customer cards. Nothing sat at 1.23. Mr Haddow's binding was paid, the Clarke order was two shillings short, and the gilt on the Psalter had flaked where someone leaned on the press. By the afternoon I had decided the numbers were a stray mark, the kind a child makes when told to count and gets bored. Then Mrs Oyelaran came in to collect her mother's photograph album and asked, quite casually, whether we still kept the old frames. We did, in the back. Behind them, in a biscuit tin, was a bundle of tracing paper with the same loop drawn again and again, each time a little less certain of itself, the numbers changing: 1.19, 1.20, 1.21.

I think 1.23 is the day she stopped drawing it. I have not told her that. I wrapped the album in brown paper and wrote her a receipt for nothing. You once said I never finish anything. I am finishing this letter instead, and I am keeping the tin.
