Dolphin with swirling waves

Black and grey · Flash

A dolphin arcs upward through a set of curling, flowing wave lines and swirls. The design uses smooth, tapered dark linework with no shading, and the lines vary in weight to suggest motion. It is rendered in a single dark purple-black tone on a light, textured background.

The ferry has already gone by the time you reach the slipway, so you sit on the cold steps with your boots beside you and watch the tide do what it always does at Carrack Point, folding itself over the breakwater as if it has somewhere better to be. Your grandmother used to say the dolphins came in with the turn of the water, and that a person who wanted to leave should look for the one that breaks the surface closest to shore. You have looked every evening for a week. Nothing yet but gulls and the grey bulk of the lifeboat shed.

Then a fin cuts the swell beyond the buoy, and then another, and you are on your feet before you have decided to stand. They rise in a long curve, the way a pen stroke rises when the hand is loose, and where they turn the water curls up behind them in thin scrolls that hang and unspool and fall back. Old Mr Penhale, who mends nets two doors down, shouts that they are chasing mackerel. You know better. They are only showing off for the harbour wall.

You take your boots in one hand and the envelope from your coat pocket in the other. The ferry timetable is folded inside, and under it the letter with your name on it in your sister's careful capitals. You do not open it. You step down onto the wet stones and wade out until the cold climbs your shins, and the nearest dolphin glides past close enough to hear it breathe, its wave-lines still lifting into the air like hair. Then it dips, and the water closes over the place where it was, smooth and dark as ink.
