Script quote along a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quotation runs diagonally along the forearm, reading "Life flows on within you and without you". The letters use a flowing, cursive hand with varied stroke weight and a looped capital L, all in solid black ink. The lettering is the clear focus against plain skin, with a wooden surface and a yellow bag in the background.

The Constance Mae had come in with her name half flaked away, and old Arthur Pim wanted it back before the Thursday tide.

"Do the loop on the C like you did for my father," he said, leaning on the gunwale with his cap pushed back. "He'd want her looking proper."
She drew the first letter in one movement, the tail running out past the wood as if the stroke had somewhere else to be. The varnish smelled sharp. Gulls argued over a fish head on the slipway. Arthur watched her hand the way men watch weather.
"My Ruth never liked the sea," he said. "Said it took everything and gave back only what it wanted. I told her the water doesn't keep a ledger. It just goes on, in and out, whether any of us are standing on the quay or not."
Nell kept her eyes on the curve of the M. She thought of her own boat, sold years ago, with the name she had painted on its stern, which nobody had ever repainted. On Thursday morning the Constance Mae slid out past the breakwater, her letters bright in the low sun. Arthur lifted one hand from the wheel. Nell raised her brush, and the tide took the boat away.
