A blue inhaler with a grey cap is wrapped by a red ribbon banner bearing the words IT AINT EASY BEIN' WHEEZY in black capitals and lettering. The ridge road was the only way out of Marrow Hollow once the dust came up off the flats, and everyone who walked it carried a blue tin in their coat. Mabry Shand carried two, one for herself and one for whoever she met halfway. The red ribbon wrapped round the tin had been her grandmother's idea. It was a joke, the old woman said, a way to make a bad chest look like a parade, and the village had taken the saying on as its own: it ain't easy, being wheezy, so mind the stile.

The storm came on the third Tuesday of the thaw, a grey wall with pink grit caught in its edge. Halfway up the ridge Mabry found Tobin Reeve sitting on the stile with his knees hugged to his chest and his lips gone the colour of slate. He had climbed up from the lower farms alone, because nobody had told him the carrier was late. His tin was empty. She could hear the whistle in him from three paces off.

She sat beside him and counted out her doses by feel, one press, one breath, one press. Her own tin still had one left after she had given him his, and she did not count it. Tobin said the ribbon was daft. She said that was exactly why it was there. They walked down together with the wind at their backs and the dust settling pink on the heather, and at the bottom the lamp in the chapel window was lit, the way it always was when someone was still out.

Mabry left the empty tin on the chapel shelf, where it stayed for years, its little pale heart rubbed nearly white by thumbs.
