Hammer, roses and banner on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A hammer is shown vertically across the upper arm with two red roses with green leaves, one at the top and one at the bottom, and a ribbon banner wrapped around the handle reading SMASH THE PATRIARCHY. The design uses bold black outlines with solid fills and shading on the hammer head and handle. Red and green dominate the roses and banner against the grey and skin tones of the hammer and background.

Dear Jean,

You'll not believe what Skipper said on Tuesday. We were four days out past the Dogger with the nets coming up heavy, and he stood at the rail and told me the deck was no place for a lass, so I was to stick to the galley and the spuds. I said the spuds could wait. I went down to the hold anyway and pulled the gurnard off the sorting belt myself, and Davie Coull, who's been fishing since he was twelve, didn't say a word when I took his knife off the hook.

After the tea things were cleared I sat on the steps to the forecastle with Dad's old claw hammer across my knees. You remember it, the one he used for mending the coal bucket and every pan we ever owned. I'd been meaning to put a new shaft in it. Instead I wrapped a strip of red ribbon round the handle, the way the Hull girls used to do on their bikes, and wrote on it in biro, big enough to read from the bridge: SMASH THE PATRIARCHY. Then I hung it on the galley hook above the stove, where Skipper has to look at it every time he comes down for his dinner.

He hasn't mentioned it. But yesterday he came in for a mug of tea, lifted the hammer off the hook, turned it over in his big hands for a long while, and hung it back up straight.

Love, Maggie
