Inhaler and PUFF PUFF PASS cloud
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a shaded inhaler on the left, with stippled dots and small puff clouds drifting around it. On the right, a bold cartoon cloud with a comic-style burst reads PUFF PUFF PASS in heavy black capitals. The work is in black ink and grey shading, with a square, centred composition on the skin.

At the Harrowfield reunion the hall still smelled of floor polish and wet coats, and nobody could agree who had brought the grey inhaler. Mrs Pell swore it had been Dora Quill's, the girl who sat by the radiator and never ran in games. Dora swore it had been left on the skipping rope in the summer of the big frost, and that she had only ever held it for other people.

The old folk told it plainly. When the children turned the long rope in the yard, they chanted the counting rhyme, puff, puff, pass, and whoever missed a beat had to hand their breath to the next child. A cloud of it hung over the rope like a shout in a comic, and Miss Haddow, the teacher, let it drift out through the high window. She said a sensible child could not learn with his chest full of other children's air.
So when the inhaler clicked on the stage that evening, the room went quiet. Dora pressed it once, carefully, as if it might bite. A small grey cloud rose from the mouthpiece, round and bold, its edges ragged like a thought that had been shouted. It hung under the lights, turned slowly towards the door, and went out after the rope.
Mrs Pell found the rope on the Monday, coiled tight on its hook and still warm to the touch. Tied to the handle was a slip of paper in a child's careful hand that read, Your go.
