Script quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink quote, written in a flowing handwritten script, across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is fine and even, with the letters joined in a cursive style and a full stop at the end. The skin is tanned and the lighting is warm, with a white background and a pink top strap visible at the lower edge.

Dearest Winifred, you will think I have gone soft in the head, writing to you on a Tuesday when the post only goes Thursday, but the kettle has boiled dry twice and Mrs Pardoe has gone to see her sister in Margate, so I have the back parlour to myself and a page to fill.

The pier lamps came on at half four and Mr Kettering from number six has been shouting at the gull on the bin lid since breakfast. The rooms are half empty now the season is over. The damp has got into the wallpaper in the front room, a brown tide line that climbs a little every week, and I have stopped pretending to scrub it. Behind the dresser, while I was dragging the sideboard out, I found one of Father's old cards in his best copperplate, the kind he used for the church notices. This too shall pass, it said. I laughed until I had to sit down on the stairs.

But here is the thing I want to tell you. Yesterday a young woman came up the path with a rucksack and a face like she had been crying into the sea. She asked for a room for a fortnight and paid in coins she counted out on the hall table, every one. I gave her the room over the bay. This morning I found she had copied the words onto a scrap of paper and pinned it above her bed, in a loose, joined-up hand, the way you would sign a letter to someone you loved.

I have decided that is what Father meant all along: not that things are easy, but that you must write them down somewhere you can see them. I am going to find my pen and do the same for the front room. Give the children my love, and tell Tom the gate is still sticking.
