Three in the morning and the first loaves are already in, so I am writing this by the lamp while the dough proves. You will not believe what the blue fellow wanted last night. He came up the back lane the way he always does, one hand on his pipe, trailing grey smoke like a wet scarf, and sat himself down on the upturned flour sack under the sign. Mr Ashdown was ready to shout him off, but the little man only asked for a crust and a ha'penny's worth of patience.

I gave him the heel of the tin loaf, because the good cob was promised to the Mill Road ladies. He broke it into his lap and fed it, crumb by crumb, into the glass bowl of his hookah, where it bubbled up in colours I have no word for. Then he leaned back against the red spotted stool he carries about with him and said the trouble with bread is that nobody feeds the head, only the belly. Feed your head, he said, and the rest of you will follow.

I told him we had no time for riddles. He laughed so hard the smoke curled up around the bakery clock and stopped it at four minutes to five. The dough was still rising when I looked back, and the clock has not moved since. Mr Ashdown says dawn is late because we are too slow with the ovens. I think the little man is simply in no hurry to leave us.
