Interlaced scroll tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line tattoo of interlaced looping scrolls with curled ends and two small leaf shapes sits on the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is centred on the skin with plenty of space around it. A silver chain bracelet runs across the top of the frame above the wrist.

Dear Nell, the pattern came back from the customs post at Dover with a thumbprint of ink across one corner, so I suspect some clerk read it over his tea and wondered what sort of woman sends lace designs across the Channel. Tell Aunt Ivy I have finished the collar she asked for, the one with the double loop she says her mother wore. I worked it on the pillow by the window until my eyes gave out, then I did the leaves by lamplight, which is the only way I can get them to sit right.

The trouble is the knot. Every time I pin the scroll I come round to the same place where the two curls meet, and I cannot tell which thread goes over. Mr Halloran at the post office says a true interlace never ends, it only pretends to. I told him that sounded like a sermon. He laughed and said everything in Honiton sounds like a sermon if you have been bent over a pillow long enough.
I took the scroll to the edge of the lane this morning, where the hedge is thin and you can see the road running down towards the coast. A carter had stopped with a load of straw, and his boy was tying the horse to a gatepost. I held the paper up against the sky so the lines showed through, and the boy asked whether it was a map. I said it was a way of going round something without getting lost, which is more than I can say for myself. Write soon and tell me whether your stitches are still holding. Your loving sister, Ada.
