Interlaced snake design with leaf filler
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two interlaced snake-like forms with segmented bodies, set within a dense frame of pointed leaves, scrolls and curled tendrils. It is rendered in clean black linework with no shading, dotwork or fill, on a sheet of pale, slightly creased paper. The design is centred and roughly diamond-shaped, with the ornamental filler balancing the snakes across the composition.

Mae had the gate on its trestles by Tuesday, the hinges rusted to brown crusts that flaked away under the wire brush like pastry. Two snakes ran through the middle of it, their bodies ringed in segments, crossing over and under each other so many times she had stopped counting. Around them the founder had poured leaves, pointed and cupped, and scrolls that curled back on themselves like the ends of unrolled ribbon. Someone in the 1870s had drawn the whole thing on paper first, and she kept that faded sheet pinned above the bench, its creases gone dark from a century in a vestry drawer.

Dev, her apprentice, wanted to weld the broken tendril and be done. Mae shook her head and ran a finger along the loop until it stopped at a leaf that overlapped it. The snakes had never been meant to end, she said. The founder had wanted the eye to lose where they began. Dev sulked and swept the floor, and the grinder's dust hung gold in the last of the light coming through the high windows.
That night, with the forge gone cold and the yard quiet, Mae turned a leaf over under the lamp and found two letters stamped small on its underside, T and A, with a date beneath them. She sat for a long time with her thumb on the initials. Then she took a block of wax, pressed it against the leaf that still stood, and began to carve the one that was missing.
In the morning the gate went back on its hinges and swung with only a faint complaint. The new leaf sat among the old ones, indistinguishable to anyone who had not spent a week with their face close to the iron. Mae cut her own initials into its underside, small, where only the gatekeeper would ever think to look.
