Heart with keyhole and flowers design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a large heart outlined with beaded dots, with a keyhole shape in its centre and a smaller heart-like motif behind it. Keys, rosettes, leaves and swirling ornamental flourishes surround the heart, all built from fine and bold ink lines and stippled dots. The design is done in black ink on pale paper and fills the frame diagonally with a balanced, lace-like composition.

The ring of keys is heavier than it has any right to be, and you carry it up Bede Street the way your mother carries the washing, balanced on one hip. The small key with the filed wards belongs to the lamp room. Mr Carrick counts the brass checks every morning and you count them back, so if that key goes astray, the board at the pit head will show men still underground who are already home.

Everyone in Hebburn Row is making lace that autumn. Mrs Dodd crochets doilies for the chapel tea, the Co-op has run out of red rosettes for the gala, and the boys have nailed a tin heart above the back gate for luck. You think of that tin heart when the lamp room door sticks and you have to lean your whole shoulder into the frame before the lock gives with a small, polite click, like a sigh.
The night of the fall at Number Four, nobody asks you for the key. Mr Carrick stands in the lamp room doorway with his cap in his hands and his eyes on the floor, and you understand he is not asking because he has no need to. You unhook the ring from your belt, find the small key by feel, and hand it over. He turns it once, slowly, and the lock seems to remember you.
Afterwards you walk home past the gate, where the tin heart has rusted to the colour of old brick, and you rub a clean patch with your thumb so it catches the lamplight. The keys knock against your hip with every step. You keep the rest of them. Somebody will need a door opened before morning, and you know now that you are the one who will hear it knock.
