Interlocking script monogram on the back of the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of the back of a person's neck, with dark hair pulled up and the face not shown. The centre of the neck carries a large, interlocking monogram of looping script initials, drawn in clean, even black linework. The plain background and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Mr Tregear would not let you touch the brush until you could draw a capital S in one unbroken pull, and even then he made you practise on newspaper pinned to the shed wall. Forty boats crowded the inner harbour that spring, and every one of them wanted its name in gold on the bow before the mackerel came in. You learned the loops first, the big swooping ones that carried the eye round the letters like a tide round a pier, and only then the letters themselves.

The Constance Mary needed two initials, C and M, woven together so that each held the other like hands clasped in a pew. Tregear drew them in pencil on brown paper, pricked the outline with a pounce wheel, and dusted the pattern over the hull while the fishermen smoked on the quay and pretended not to watch. Your first attempt sagged where the M dropped into the C. He said nothing. He just turned the board upside down and showed you the gap, the way the eye wants to fall through it.
You worked through the night of the Sunday tide with a lamp hooked to the mast, the sea slapping the hull below you. By dawn the letters were done, and the boat went out at six with its name curling across the bow in black outline, every stroke filled in by you with no one to correct you. Tregear stood on the slipway and nodded once. That was the whole of your payment, and you have never wanted more.
