Three sepia photos of a small fine line infinity symbol tattoo, on the hand near the wrist, on the back of the neck and on the inner forearm.

Small infinity symbol tattoos in three placements

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

This collage shows three sepia photographs of the same small infinity symbol, drawn in thin black linework. The top photo shows it on the hand near the wrist, the middle photo on the back of the neck below the ear, and the bottom photo on the inner forearm beside a bracelet and a cord. The monochrome tone and close framing keep the focus on the simple outline of each tattoo.

Sit down, the pair of you, before the wind takes the last of the light. You want the road to Saltcross? Then you'll hear how the surveyor Enoch Hale laid it, because he was too stubborn to lay it straight. The government men wanted a line from Dunmoor to the coast, clean as a ruler. Hale walked it with a sack of cord, a tin of boiled sweets and a bottle of cold tea. Whenever he came to a dry lake he went round it, and whenever he met a ridge of red rock he went over, and by the time he had finished he had drawn a figure of eight across the sand, two loops meeting at one crossing.

The men in the office called it a mistake and sent a lorry out to correct it. The lorry driver, a fellow called Tomasz Brand, drove the eastern loop for three days and came back to the same crossing every time he thought he had got away. Hale's widow, Marta, kept the petrol stop at that crossing, which everyone called the Pinch. She had a habit of hanging a paraffin lamp in the window each evening, and when Brand came limping in with his tyres in ribbons he asked her why she bothered. She said the road never ends, it only comes back, and a lamp is for whoever is still driving it.

Brand stayed the night. In the morning he found the lamp had been left burning on the sill, its wick turned low, and beside it a ball of cord tied off in a neat knot. He took the cord with him and drove the eastern loop again, this time with the window down. He could see the lamp from the crossing every time he passed it, a small yellow point going round and round, as though somebody were keeping him company on the far side of the sand.
