Jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with flowers sketch

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil line drawing of a carved jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with a curled stem, framed by a rose, a peony-like flower and several leaves. The linework is single-weight and sketchy, with light hatching on the leaf veins and no shading or solid fills. The drawing sits centred on a plain cream background, with the composition spreading wide and leaving open space around the edges.

The rain had found the gap in the awning by eleven, so the pumpkins sat in their own reflections and nobody bothered to move them. I'd come down to Hallow Street market with a crate of seconds from my uncle's allotment, and by half past I'd sold four, given two to a boy who asked nicely, and was standing with my hands in my coat pockets, watching water run off the end of the bunting.

The ugly one sat at the end of the trestle. Its grin had been cut with a bread knife, zigzagging across the rind like frost cracking a pond, and its curled stem had snapped halfway and been taped back on. Tom from the flower stall next door had been eyeing it for an hour. He had buckets of peonies going brown at the edges and one rose that had outlasted the summer, and he said the pumpkin looked like it had laughed itself into a crack. I told him that was the nicest thing anyone had said about my produce all week.

When the crowd thinned I opened the sketchbook on the crate and drew it: the pumpkin in the middle, a peony tumbling off one side, the rose tucked low where the leaves crowded. I hatched the veins lightly, because the pencil was nearly worn down and a heavy line would have looked like I meant it. Rain spotted the page and the graphite bled into grey halos. I left them. Tom leaned over my shoulder, dripping, and said that one's got a face. The grin on the paper stayed exactly where I'd put it, cracked and delighted, while the flowers around it blurred into the wet.
