Stippled floral bouquet design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A monochrome drawing of a full floral bouquet with a large peony-style bloom at the centre, flanked by a tulip, open five-petalled flowers, buds and sprigs of leaves. The linework is built from fine dots and short strokes, giving a stippled, shaded texture with bold contrast in the petals. The design fills a square composition on a plain light background with no body or skin visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's youngest daughter, Ilse, was given the walled garden of the palace of Varnhold on the morning the old king died, because no one else wanted it. The steward said the soil was tired and the paths were choked with bindweed. Ilse said nothing. She took a trowel, a bucket of river water and a tin of ink-black seed from the chest her mother had left her, and she began at the north wall, dotting the earth with her finger the way her mother had dotted cloth to make it shine.

For a season nothing came up but grey stalks and the crows that stood on them. Then, one dew-heavy dawn, a peony opened at the wall's foot, as big as a cartwheel and crowded with petals that curled like the frills on a bishop's collar. Beside it a tulip stood up on a bent stem, sharp and certain, and the buds came behind them in small grey clusters, each one spotted with the tiny dark marks of a fine pen. The court came to look. The steward came too, and stood with his hands behind his back, and said nothing about the soil.

The king's widow came last, at the hour when the bells rang for vespers, and asked Ilse what she had planted. Ilse said she had planted only what she remembered from her mother's apron, which was every flower that had ever been stitched across it. The widow touched a petal and it was cool and soft under her glove. She asked for a bouquet to take to the chapel. Ilse cut stems from the peony, the tulip, the open five-petalled blooms and a handful of sprigs, and bound them with thread, and the widow carried them away through the arch without once looking back at the walls, which were, by then, full of flowers no one had watered.
