Traditional-style flash design of a glowing jack-o'-lantern nested in a purple rose with green leaves and an orange and red flame above, drawn on white paper.

Jack-o'-lantern rose flash design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A carved jack-o'-lantern sits within a large purple rose, with a grey bone-like stem at its top and a flame-like swirl with a black tip rising to the upper right. Bold black outlines define the petals, leaves and pumpkin, with soft gradient shading in purple, orange, red and teal. The design is centred on a white sheet of paper against a dark wooden surface.

Pass that ladle down, Tobias, and mind the copper, for I'll not tell this twice over a cold pot. You want to know why the old Mercy carried a pumpkin in her hold all the way from Lisbon? Because Captain Hollis was a fool for a bargain, and the market woman swore it would keep till Michaelmas if nobody cut it. Somebody cut it.

That was young Pell, the powder monkey with the quick knife and the quicker tongue. Come the feast of All Souls he had carved the thing into a face, three triangles and a grin full of teeth like broken crockery, and set a stub of tallow in a grey whalebone socket on its crown. We lashed it to the rail by the galley hatch, and there it grinned at the sea for a week while the wind went round to the south-west and nobody slept.

On the ninth night the rose in the tin pot by my stove, which had given us nothing but thorns since Cadiz, opened black-purple in the dark, petal on petal, and the fog came down thick as wet wool. Pell swore the lantern's flame had turned to lean north-east, the way a dog leans toward its master. I told him flames lean where the draught says. He said the draught had been dead calm for an hour. We followed that little flame through the murk for the better part of a night, and at first light we raised the Cornish light, bold as a church bell.

So I'll not have it snuffed, not even now the pumpkin's gone soft and sour. Hand me that tin, boy. The rose still needs watering, and the lamp still wants lighting.
