Two skulls and purple roses in an ornate frame

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A drawing of two skulls with their faces close together, framed by a scrolled border with small hearts and wisps of smoke. Two skeletal hands rest near the lower skull and a string of beads hangs at the left. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading define the skulls, while the large roses are filled with blue and purple tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have stamped four hundred passports since the lamps came on at the Varnholt crossing, and none has made you lift your head the way this drawing did. It was slid under the glass at twenty past midnight, a sheet of cream card with two skulls leaning together inside a scrolled frame. Blue-purple roses crowd the bottom, heavy as wet velvet, and little hearts climb the border beside curls of smoke. Pinned to one corner is a note in a hand you know: Keep this for me until I come back.

The hand belonged to Mirela, who crossed the river in March with a hymnal, a string of glass beads and nothing else you were allowed to carry. You were sixteen and on the wrong side of the wire, so you watched her go from the bakery window, where the chimney smoke curled over the glass the way it does over a frame. The rule was simple: papers for those who had them, silence for those who did not. You kept that rule for thirty-one years.

Now the card rests under your palm and the lamp hums. You turn it over. On the back is an old stamp, its ink gone brown, reading ADMITTED. You had never noticed it before. Someone pressed it there the morning she left, and you realise, slowly, that it was your own hand, fresh and frightened, in a uniform that did not yet fit.

You lift the rubber stamp, press it once to the blank page of the register and watch the date bloom beneath it. Outside, the barrier rises without a sound. The beads in the drawing catch the light as if someone has only just let go of them, and you walk out past the guard with the card held flat against your chest, following the smoke towards the river.
