Sugar skull with butterflies and roses
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A shaded pencil or ink drawing of a skull with ornate scrollwork on the cheeks and a small heart on the forehead. Three butterflies, two roses and feathers surround the skull, with soft grey shading and dark outlines. The design is centred on a pale sheet, with faint pink tones on some sketch lines.

The frost lasted until March that year, and by the time the ewes were lambing on Hollin Farm the kitchen shelf had gone grey with cold. Old Tobias Reeve kept a clay skull there, painted white and ringed with roses, and he would not let anyone dust it. Sweep round it, he said, it has work to do.

His daughter Nell thought it was foolishness until the night the snow pressed in under the back door and she sat up with the lamp and saw three pale moths settle on the skull's brow. They were not moths. They had the wings of butterflies, black-edged and dusted with ash, and they crept over the cheekbones as if reading the scrolls with their feet.
Nell did not wake her father. She set the bread knife and a tin of lamp oil by the sill, and in the morning the butterflies were gone and two roses lay across the step, cut from the frost-bitten bush by the well. Her father looked at them a long time. Then he took a grey feather from the hen house and tucked it under the skull's jaw, the way his own mother had done.
The thaw came the week after. Nell says the butterflies still come back in every hard winter, and the ewes are easier when they do.
