Japanese dragon and flower sketch on paper
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil linework drawing of a dragon head and a fanged demon-like mask, with scaled patterns across the top and five-petalled flowers along the left and right edges. The lines are fine and mostly unshaded, with some hatching in the mouth and around the brow. The composition fills the sheet, with the subjects overlapping in a rounded arrangement.

My dear Tomas, the dragon in the screen-painter's workshop has finally been given its eyes, and I wanted you to hear it from me before the rumours in the market reach you. Master Ueno sat up all night over the sheet of paper, drawing the scales first in tight little overlapping fish-shapes, then the plum blossoms along the edges, five petals each, the way his grandmother taught him. The demon mask he left until last. He said a mask is only frightening when it is sure of itself, and he wanted the fangs to look like they had been waiting a long time.

Yesterday the dragon's head came round the corner of the lacquered gate, the way the old ones do, and the boy who sweeps the floor dropped his broom. Ueno did not look up. He simply said, "Not yet," and went on shading the hollow of the mouth with a hair from his own brush. The boy asked what the dragon wanted. Ueno said it wanted to be finished, and that the difference between a monster and a guardian is only which way it is facing.
So I have been standing here since dawn, watching the lines settle. The longer I look, the more the blossoms seem to be pushing the monster back toward the gate, as if the flowers were the ones keeping the watch. I cannot tell you which of them is holding the other in. Ueno says that is the point, and that you will understand when you come home and see it inked.
Come soon, before he decides the paper needs one more wave. Your sister sends her love and says the carp in the pond have started following me about the garden, which she says is a sign. I told her it is only that I bring them bread.
