Winged hourglass with roses sketch

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing on paper of an hourglass with a triangular eye above it, a feathered wing spreading to the upper right, and a small skull set into a scroll. Three roses with leaves sit beside the hourglass, with a faint second wing and rose at the left edge. The linework is loose and sketchy with light shading on the glass and wings, and the drawing is monochrome in purple-grey pencil.

Hush now, the fiddler can wait a minute, because this is the bit at a wedding where the old ones tell the truth. My grandmother had this from a glassblower's widow in Whitby, and she swore the hourglass on her mantel was the very one. Sand never asks permission, she used to say, and neither does a sailor's promise.

The glassblower was Ada Penrose, and her son Tobias took the morning tide to the Baltic with a letter folded inside his shirt. He promised to be home before the sand ran through the glass she'd given him for his watch. She painted an eye on the cap, a little triangle with a steady stare, so the glass would watch the sand falling and leave her be. Every dawn she turned it again. Three roses came up along the garden wall that she'd planted the week he left, one for each year she had counted, and a gull kept landing on the sill with a feather in its beak.

Two summers passed, then a third. On the last grain of the third autumn, with the shutters banging, a man walked up the lane with a torn strip of sailcloth over one shoulder. He didn't say a word. He lifted the glass, turned it, and set it down, and the sand began again from the top.

So when the bride's father tips the glass for you tonight, mind the bottom of it. That's where the luck settles, not the top where everybody's looking. Now, fiddler, play.
