Pocket watch and roses design sketch

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A red ink pencil-style sketch on aged paper shows an open pocket watch with a detailed clock face, surrounded by two full-bloom roses with leaves and stems. The linework is loose and sketchy with light hatched shading on the watch casing and petals. The design is monochrome red throughout and fills the page with a diagonal composition from top left to bottom right.

Ada wound the watch at the turn of the tide, the way her father had, with the lamp already turning above her and the brass case still warm from her coat pocket. The mechanism ticked on in its tired way, a fraction behind the clock bolted to the lantern room wall, and she had never let it correct itself. Correction was for people who expected to be rescued on time.

The relief boat was due at six, but the sea had been throwing itself at the landing since noon, and the rota book lay open on the table with its columns of ticks and crosses. Ada had drawn roses in its margins through the long winter nights, using the red ink her father kept for chart corrections. She had sketched the open watch beside them so often that the drawing had begun to look more certain than the thing itself, its hands stuck at a quarter past four because she could never get them to sit right.

At twenty past four by the watch, a lantern bobbed out of the spray beyond the north skerry. She stood at the rail and counted the strokes of the oars until the bow knocked against the landing stage. Then she went inside, licked the nib of the pen, and wrote the arrival in the log in red, beside the roses, as if the time had been hers to decide all along.
