Japanese geisha back piece with cherry blossom
Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with long dark hair is photographed from behind against a bright pink wall, showing a large Japanese-style tattoo covering her back. The central figure is a geisha in a purple and orange kimono with a golden hair ornament, surrounded by cherry blossom, a stone lantern and a Japanese character panel. Bold outlines and saturated colour fill the design, with a dragon-like figure and further scenes extending down the side and lower back.

The lantern at the end of the Shijo bridge had been dark since the spring floods, and Aoi, who sold sweets from a tray outside the teahouse, was the only one who still walked past it at dusk. She carried a paper of rice cakes for the boatman's grandson and a gold comb her mother had left her, which she had not yet decided to sell.

The dragon lived under the third arch, where the water turned green. Everyone in the quarter knew it and pretended otherwise. It had lost a scale to a fishing hook the autumn before and had been sulking since, blowing bubbles that smelled of wet camphor. On the night the petals came down thick as snow, Aoi knelt at the stone steps and asked it what the lantern needed to burn again.
"Your comb," it said, its voice like a cart on gravel. "And the name of the woman who taught you to walk in those sleeves." She refused the first and laughed at the second, because her mother had taught her nothing except how to hold a tray steady in the wind. The dragon waited. The petals kept settling on the water and turning into small red boats, and she understood that it was not greedy, only lonely for something that remembered it kindly.
She pinned the comb back into her hair, lit a taper from the teahouse lamp and climbed the steps to the lantern. The flame caught on the first try. Below, the water went gold, and the dragon curled once around the pillar and was gone, leaving a single scale on the stone. Aoi kept it in her sleeve until the petals fell for the last time.
