Tribal armband tattoo on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A bold tribal design of spirals, curved bands and pointed triangular shapes wraps around the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder. The solid black linework is filled with fine interior patterning, and the design is in a single dark ink with no colour. The motif sweeps vertically along the arm against a black sleeveless top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teroa made me draw the spiral in wet sand before he let a comb touch anything. The sand took the mark badly, so I drew it again, and again, until the curl closed like a shell. "A swell that turns back on itself has met a point of land," he said, scraping my first attempt away with his heel. "Learn where it bends and you will never be surprised by the sea."

In the canoe shed the rain drummed on the thatch while he showed me how the triangles were really three waves breaking at once, each one pushing the next into a sharp point. He cut the lines with a comb of bone, dipped it in soot and tapped it through the skin of a practice board. The sound was small and patient, like someone counting. My hands wanted to hurry. His did not.

When the design was finished he held a lamp to it and turned it slowly, the way you turn a shell to find its seam. Then he asked me to name the patterns. I gave him the headland, the reef, the three breaking swells, and the long wave that climbs toward the shoulder. He shook his head at the last one. "That is the wave that lifts the hull," he said. "The others only tell you where the danger is."

Two moons later I stood at the stern of the fleet with the spiral he had taught me pressed into the back of my mind. The swell came out of the dark and curled around the reef exactly where my hands had already drawn it. I called the turn to the steersman, and the canoe rode up over it like a hand lifting a child, and nobody on board looked back at the water.
