Jellyfish pencil drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A jellyfish is drawn in pencil with a domed bell that has ridged, scalloped segments and shaded edges. Long, thin tentacles trail downwards and curl across the cream paper, with finer, more heavily shaded oral arms in the lower centre. The work uses only grey graphite tones on a plain, pale background, with the subject placed slightly off centre.

Tuesday. The jelly came in on the tide with the kelp, or what was left of it, and Mr Pardoe had it in a bucket of seawater before I could ask him to leave it be. It is larger than I expected, the bell as wide as my two hands, and when I tipped it into the enamel tray it folded itself down, then opened again as though it had only been thinking.

I have been trying to draw it since eleven. Graphite will not do what the thing does. The bell is easy enough, a dome of overlapping scallops like the ribs of an umbrella left out in the rain, and I can shade the edges darker so the light seems to run off them. The tentacles are another matter. They trail out thinner than a hair and never stop moving, so by the time I have drawn the third curl the first one has already slid somewhere else across the paper.
Mrs Ellery from the next cottage came round with a jug of cider and asked what I was making. I said a portrait. She said it looked more like a chandelier that had gone out to sea. I told her it was the only honest thing I had drawn all month, and she laughed and left me to it.
By dusk I had given up on keeping it still and simply let the lines follow it. At the bottom of the sheet, where the oral arms hang heaviest, I pressed the pencil until the paper shone. Then I tipped the tray over the sink and let the sea take it back, and the drawing was the only record left. I signed the corner and dated it.
