Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn feather in black ink on white paper, with a patterned central quill and curled tendrils extending outwards. The feather is built from fine lines, small circles, dotted shading and hatching within its sections. The drawing is centred on a plain white background, with a quilted fabric surface visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gatehouse of Hollin Scar had no roof left by the time Mother sent me up to it with a pot of ink and a bundle of goose quills. The castle belonged to the crows now, and to the peacocks the old steward had left behind, which screamed at dusk like rusted hinges. I was nine and had been told to copy the lord's accounts before the rain came, but the rain always came, so I drew instead.

I drew what I could see through the window slit: the birds' tails dragging across the flagstones like sweeping ink, each feather ending in a dark eye ringed with dots. I tried to make mine rounder than theirs. Every curl I made, the nettles below seemed to lean after it. Old Tam from the village said a feather drawn inside a ruin would keep the walls from falling, so I went on, filling page after page with spirals until my wrist ached and my lamp smoked.

The turn came in March, when the north wall split and the steward's oak chest tumbled into the moat. Inside, under a blanket of sodden paper, lay a single peacock feather as long as my arm, its eye gouged out clean. On the back, in a child's hand I did not remember, was a drawing of that same feather with every curl exactly where I had left it.

I pinned it above my bed. Some nights the lamp burns low, and the tendrils on the paper seem to uncurl a little further towards the window. I have stopped trying to draw them closed.
