Colour tattoo on a calf of the Joker, a comic-book villain with green hair and a wide grin, peering through a vintage camera.

Joker holding a vintage camera on a calf

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a comic-book style Joker character with green hair and a wide, toothy grin, one eye visible above a camera held up to the face. A gloved hand grips the camera body, and a dark hat brim frames the top of the design. The linework is bold with smooth shading, and the palette combines greens, purples and flesh tones against deep black and grey backgrounds.

Tuesday, 14th June 1955. The fire pictures came back from the developer with a face in the corner of every frame. Mr Orme at the Gazette says it's damp in the chemicals and tells me to stop fussing. But I shot the Tallis Mill blaze standing on the bridge with the borrowed camera pressed to my eye, and I'm certain nobody stood on the far bank. Yet there he is in print, green hair lifting in the heat, a grin so wide it looks painted on the paper, one eye squeezed shut as if he's sighting me down the barrel.

Thursday. I went back to the mill to see for myself. Nothing but blackened beams and a smell of wet ash. On the wall where the bridge rail meets the stone sat a dark felt hat, brim turned down, as neat as a churchgoer's. Tucked into the band was a card in careful capitals: SMILE, MISS HALLORAN. IT'S A SMALL TOWN AND I KNOW ALL YOUR FACES. I laughed, which I suppose was the point, and then I took the hat home because I couldn't think what else to do with it.

Saturday. Mr Orme ran the fire photograph on the front page with the grinning man left in, calling it a trick of the light. By noon the whole High Street was pointing at it. Mrs Pell swore she'd seen him at the bus stop. The baker's boy has started whistling the same three notes he hums in the margins of my negatives.

So I've stopped chasing him. This morning I pinned the print on the church notice board, under the jumble sale, and beside it I pinned a fresh one of myself wearing the hat, grinning back at the lens. Let the town squint at that for a while.
