Joker holding a vintage camera on a calf

Other · Colour · Photo

A comic-style portrait of the Joker, with green hair, a white face and a wide red grin, peers over a vintage rangefinder camera held up to one eye. A dark hat brim and shadowed background frame the figure, and the gloved hand gripping the camera is shown in pale purple. Smooth outlines and soft shading are used throughout, with vivid greens, purples and reds set against the black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Thursday, Lowestoft. Rain all afternoon, so the Dodgem queue dried up and I sat in the booth with the rangefinder across my knees, cleaning the lens on my shirt because I'd forgotten the cloth again. Mum always said a photographer who forgets his cloth has forgotten what he's looking at.

At half past five a man in a long grey coat came up to the booth and asked for a portrait. Green hair combed back wet, and a face so white it looked lit from inside. He didn't pay first. He said he'd pay after, and that I'd want to be paid after. I stood him against the painted backdrop of the big wheel and ducked under the cloth. Through the viewfinder he was perfect. One side of his mouth went up and stayed there, like a hook set in fish.

I took six frames. The shutter stuck on the seventh and I had to wind it back with my thumbnail, swearing at the tin of a thing. When I looked up he was gone, and the coins I'd been counting for the till were lined up on the counter in a neat row, every one face down.

I developed the film in the caravan tonight. Five frames of the backdrop, the wheel and a gull with a chip. The sixth shows the man, grinning past the lens at nothing. The seventh is me, under the cloth with my eye to the viewfinder, and I am grinning too. I don't remember doing it. I've been practising my face in the wing mirror all evening and it won't come back down.
