Small script 'i love you' on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is the handwritten phrase 'i love you' in a small, cursive script, set across the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is thin and even, with the letters in solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken from a close angle against a warm skin tone, with the hand partly visible on the right and a dark background on the left.

Ostrin, the clerk who reads our post, is not an unkind man. Last month he let through a recipe for pear cordial and a drawing of our dog, though he made me cut the tail off the drawing because a tail, he said, is a kind of signal.

The harbour is quiet without the Wennick boats. Father has taken to mending nets on the step where he used to sit and count the lamps coming in, and the bell at Carrow rings the hour a little late now because nobody climbs up to wind it properly. Mother's handwriting is still pinned to the dresser, the list of what to buy at market. She slanted her letters like someone leaning into rain, every line joined to the next, and I catch myself doing it when I write to you. I think that is why Ostrin has been so patient with me.

So here is the part they cannot scrape, because I have written it the way she taught us, quick and joined up, so that if anyone holds this to the lamp they will see only a boy's careless hand and nothing worth stopping for. i love you. Come home before the bell needs winding again.

Your brother, Tobin
