French script quote on inner forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's inner wrist and forearm with a handwritten-style script tattoo in black ink. The French phrase plus que ma propre vie runs in three lines, with fine, slightly uneven strokes and soft shading. The background is blurred, with warm daylight and a partial view of another person at the right edge.

The pen had dried out again, so I am writing this in pencil on the back of the tide tables, the only paper left in the harbour office that isn't damp. Luc, the gulls have taken over the net loft and Papa has stopped mending the winch, which tells you more than any telegram could. Madame Riou at the chandlery says the Sainte-Anne is due back on Thursday's tide, though she said the same thing last March.

I walked down to the quay this morning and sat on the bollard where you carved your initials when you were nine. Someone has painted over them in grey. I sat there anyway and counted the hulls coming round the breakwater, one, two, three, the way you taught me, until the number stopped meaning anything. Old Gaspard shuffled past with his crab pots and asked whether I had a man out there. I told him I had a brother who writes too seldom. He laughed and said that was the same thing in a fisherman's family.
Your last letter is folded in my apron pocket, soft at the creases from being read. You wrote that you would bring home a bottle of Newfoundland rum and that I was to stop worrying, because you had promised Mama you would be careful, and you would be careful for both of us, plus que ma propre vie. I laughed at the joke about the rum and did not laugh at the rest. I have copied the line out three times now so the words won't blur.
I have circled Thursday on the tide table and pinned it above the stove, where Papa can see it while he eats. He has not said anything about it. Tonight I will leave the lamp in the window, the way we always did, and I will count the hulls again in the morning.
