Just Breathe script on inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of the inner wrist and lower forearm with the words Just Breathe written in black script across the skin. The linework is single weight and fairly fine, with no shading, and the letters follow the slight curve of the wrist. The image is in natural colour with no colour ink, and the background shows a carpeted floor with bare feet and a few cosmetic items.

Dear Tom,

The ewes started lambing a fortnight early, which Dad says is the frost's fault and I say is the ram's, and between the two of us we have had no sleep since Sunday. The lane is iced solid from the gate to the road, so the vet's van stopped at the bottom field and the rest of the walk was on foot with a torch in my teeth.
Mum asked me to tell you the Aga has finally gone out for good and she has boiled the kettle on the camping stove. She keeps the old wireless on the windowsill now, tuned to the shipping forecast, and says the sea areas to herself while she peels potatoes. Dogger, Fisher, German Bight. I never knew she'd learned them all.
The little grey one, the one with the bent ear, was born yesterday in the straw by the water trough. She wouldn't take a breath, so I sat in the dirt with her across my knees and rubbed her ribs the way Granddad showed us, and told her what I'd tell anyone who was frightened: slow down, in and out, there's nothing else to do today. Dad came in with the lamp and said nothing. Then she coughed, and shook her head like a dog out of the river, and I cried into my scarf so nobody would see.
Anyway, she's on the hearth in a cardboard box with a hot water bottle, and I've named her Mabel after nobody. Come at Easter if the roads clear. Bring your good boots, not those city ones.
Love, Jo
