Bad Wolf script with blue spiral on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close view of black cursive script reading Bad Wolf on the inner forearm, with a blue spiral ornament sitting between the two words. The lettering has smooth, even linework, while the blue spiral is drawn with fine, flowing lines. The plain dark blue fabric behind the arm makes the ink stand out clearly.

Maud Hollis came into Greaves Lane at half four, when the ovens were only just ticking and the night baker had gone home. On the scrubbed bench sat a tray of rye, and beside it, pressed into a skin of spilt flour with the heel of a hand, were two words she could not make sense of at first: BAD WOLF. She assumed it was the delivery lads again, larking about with the sacks.

Then she saw the spiral. Someone had drawn it on the waxed paper under the loaves in blue gel, the same gel kept in the cold drawer for piping rosettes. The lines curled inward, tight at the centre and loosening outward like the coil of a clock spring. Tomasz never wrote on anything but the chalk board, and he never, ever wasted icing.

She opened the cold drawer. The blue bottles were all there, full to the cap, but tucked behind them was the old order ledger her gran had kept before the shop was sold. On every page from three winters back, beside the names of regular customers, someone had put a small blue spiral. Beside the spiral, in her gran's upright hand, were the same two words, underlined twice.

Maud took the gel, drew a careful spiral on the proving cloth and pressed the words into the first dough of the morning. When the shutter rolled up at six, a woman in a green coat stopped at the counter, tapped the loaf with one gloved finger, and read the lettering. "Still turning, then," she said. Maud handed over the bread and kept the change.
