Script quote on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thigh with a single line of cursive script tattooed across the upper front of the leg, reading "You look so cool". The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The skin is lit evenly against a dark skirt above and a plain background below, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The rain had been falling on Haddon Market since before the lamps were lit, and Mags Dunnock had given up on keeping her trestle dry. Her husband had taken the cart to the coast, so she stood under a sheet of oilcloth and counted coppers into a tin that rattled whenever the wind came off the river.

A boy came through the stalls with a crate of wet pears on his hip and stopped to watch her. He had seen her sell eels to the magistrate's cook without once raising her voice, though the cook had called her a thief and a witch in the same breath. "You look so cool," he said, not as flattery but as plain fact, the way a man might say the frost had come early. Mags laughed until she dropped a coin in the gutter, and the boy fished it out for her with two fingers.
The river-reeve sent for her the next morning. The cook was waiting in the hall with his hands folded and his face red. Mags went in wrapped in her oilcloth and spoke so evenly that the reeve made the cook pay for the eels twice and sweep the hall floor besides. Afterwards the boy asked how she had managed to stay so calm. She said the trick was to stand still while the weather argued.
The rain went on for a fortnight. By spring nobody could remember the cook's name, but the pear boy still said the words to any trader who looked drowned, and they straightened their backs a little when he did.
