Keyblade emblem on a thigh
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo of a video game style emblem showing two keyblades, a golden crown, a blue and black heart shape and a small yellow star charm on a chain. Bold black outlines are filled with blue and yellow ink, giving the design a clean, graphic finish. It is photographed close up on the thigh against plain skin, with the design centred in the frame.

The Archive door has been rusted shut since the flood, so you climb through the ventilation grille with both blades strapped across your back, the larger one knocking loose tiles as you crawl. Below, the reading room is lit the colour of deep water. The skylights gave up their glass long ago, and the tide still comes in through the roof on certain nights, leaving silt on the desks and small silver fish in the card catalogues.

Mrs Adeyemi-Hale kept the key chain on a hook by the till until the week she died. Her note was tucked into the clasp of the star charm: every lock in this city answers to one of two keys, one for the door and one for the person standing in front of it. Choose the one that answers to a heart. You had taken it for the sort of riddle a retired librarian gives a nephew who won't finish his homework.
The far wall holds a single glass cabinet, and its lock is shaped like a crown with a notch cut from the top. You fit the golden blade into it and turn. Nothing happens. You try the blue one, the one with the heart-shaped teeth, and the cabinet hums, then sighs open. Inside there is no treasure, only a ledger of every stairwell in the flooded city, each marked with a small blue star, and beneath them a line in her careful hand: you were never meant to carry the locks alone. You hang the charm on the bolt. Outside, the water is already rising.
