Compass and anchor with watercolour splashes

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey compass rose sits at the top of the forearm, with its eight-pointed star shaded in grey and its letter N visible above. A rope runs down from the compass to a black anchor near the wrist, with fine linework and light shading. Loose watercolour splashes in orange, yellow, green, blue and pink sit behind the compass and anchor and create a soft, painted background.

The ink had already skinned over by the time Brother Cuthbert noticed the mistake, which was the only reason he didn't scrape it away with his thumbnail. The compass rose sat square on the vellum, its eight points shaded in iron grey like the sky over Lindisfarne before a squall, and above it the letter N leaned at an angle he had copied from a sailor's chart without quite understanding it.

Prior Wystan wanted the sheet finished by Compline. It was a fair copy for the Mercy, the parish boat that carried cheese and psalters across the sands to the mainland twice a week. Cuthbert had spent three nights on it with the scriptorium's oak-gall ink and a tin of watercolour the bursar kept for painting saints' feast days. He laid the splashes behind the rose in orange and green and a pink like the inside of a mussel shell, letting the colour bleed wherever the wet paper pulled it.

The rope was the hard part. He drew it from the heart of the rose down the sheet, looping it through the rings of an anchor he had traced from a fisherman's knife, and he kept the line fine as a hair so the eye would follow it without being told. At the bottom the blue came in, cold and deep, and he thought of the bay at low water, where the old bell still rang under the sand for the drowned.

Wystan came in at dusk with his lantern and held the sheet to the window. He traced the rope with one finger, then the N, then the little splash of green that Cuthbert had worried over. "You've given the sea a way out of the page," he said, and rolled the chart, tied it with the spare cord, and carried it down to the jetty himself, where the boat was already rocking on the turn of the tide.
