King and queen playing cards with banner lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of two playing cards, a king of hearts and a queen with a spade, overlapped and wrapped by three ribbon banners. The banners carry the words "You're the King, baby I'm your Queen" in hand-drawn capitals, and the ribbon edges and card shadows are shaded with stippled dots. The design is drawn in black ink on plain white paper with no colour, and the composition is centred and filling the frame.

The shepherd's hut at the top of the Col de Brèche smelled of wet wool and paraffin. Outside, the wind leaned on the shutters like a drunk at a door.

She drew the queen of hearts, its corner chewed and a moustache inked on her by some bored schoolboy decades earlier. He took the king. They had argued about that king since the wedding, because the printer had given him the sour face of a bishop who had been told the wine was corked.

The lamp guttered. Somewhere below them a bell clanked, a mule or a stray sheep lost on the slope. Tomas laid his king on the table and nudged the queen back across the wood with one finger, the way he had once slid a ring across the counter of a jeweller in Annecy who kept asking whether they were certain. "Say it properly," she said. He cleared his throat. "You're the king, baby. And I'm your queen."

At dawn the snowplough's amber light crawled up the valley. Marguerite tucked the chewed queen into the breast pocket of his coat, moustache facing out, and left the rest of the deck on the table for whoever got stuck next.
