Wildflower script and flower sketch design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink pen drawing on paper of a tattoo design. Script lettering reading Do you suppose she is a wildflower runs horizontally across the middle, with thin stems looping beneath and around it. Hand-drawn wildflowers, including a dandelion seed head, poppies, a daisy and a cornflower, are shaded with fine cross-hatching and stippling.

The chairman of the Institute has asked you twice this week whether Ada Pell is really suitable to judge the flower show, and twice you have said nothing, which in Hollow Ashby passes for a reply. You know what she means. Ada grows her gladioli in a tin bath behind the signal box and lets the rest of her garden go to whatever the wind brings, so that by July the lane outside her cottage is a spill of poppies, cornflowers and white daisies gone to seed.

You walk down the embankment with her most evenings, while Frank is on the late shift and the sky over the hop fields turns the colour of weak tea. Ada talks about soil and lamplight and the bees that come over from the vicarage, and you listen the way you used to listen to the wireless, not caring much what is said so long as the voice keeps going. Once she pulled a dandelion clock from the verge and held it to your mouth. "Make a wish, Nell," she said, and you blew, and the seeds went out over the rails like a lot of small sentences nobody had finished.

The show is in the parish hall on the Saturday. The committee's dahlias stand in cut-glass rows, perfect and a little bored. Ada's entry is a jam jar of cornflowers and one bruised poppy, and the chairman stops in front of it with her gloves held together at the wrist. "Do you suppose she is a wildflower?" she asks you, loud enough for the room, and the whole hall goes quiet to hear what you will say.

You say, "Yes. That's rather the point," and you go and stand beside the jar, and Ada, without turning round, puts her hand over yours on the trestle.
