Anatomical heart held in a hand
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of an anatomical heart cradled by an outstretched hand, with spiky foliage-like shapes behind it. The upper part of the heart is shaded with stippled dots, while the vessels and the hand are drawn with clean outlines. The phrase Do not hold my heart unless you want to hold my hand is set in decorative lettering around the design.

Nobody at the Hollin Bridge Palais read the card above the cloakroom hatch, though Mrs Pask had it lettered in gold and hung where the coats came in. Do not hold my heart unless you want to hold my hand. I thought it soppy until the Saturday Eddie Marr came in wearing his good shoes and a tear in his cuff, and asked me for a waltz.

I told him he could have the waltz but not the heart. He laughed, which I hadn't expected, and held his palm out flat between us like a man offering a sugar lump to a horse. The band was playing Charmaine, the one with the slow turn in the middle, and the floor was thick with talcum and cigarette smoke. He didn't grab. He just kept his hand there, open, while the couples swung past and the sequins on my dress caught the light.
Halfway round the floor I took it. Our palms were damp and clumsy, and his thumb found the bone at the base of my fingers and stayed there. It was nothing a stranger would notice. But when the number ended he didn't let go straight away, and I found I had nowhere I needed to be.
Afterwards I pinned the card back up a little straighter. Eddie came every Saturday for the next forty years, and the shoes never changed, only the cuff, which he mended himself with black thread.
