Knitted mitten on knitting needles on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a blue knitted mitten with a ribbed cuff, hung over two crossed knitting needles that extend to the left and right. Fine dark linework and shading suggest the knit texture, with a small red heart on the mitten's thumb side. Blue ink dominates the composition, which is centred on the upper back with plain skin around it.

Maud had cast on the left mitten the week the boats stopped going out, and by the time the first snow reached the harbour wall she had knitted the right one to match, row for row, so that no one in Skerrow could tell which hand was which. She hung the pair over the two needles by the stove to dry, as her mother had done, and as her mother's mother had.

Her son Tam went north in October with the last of the herring men and did not come back before the thaw. The village said the sea had him. Maud said nothing, but she knitted. Every evening she worked a fresh cuff, and every morning she unpicked the one before, because the wool was all they had left to sell and the cuffs would not sit straight without someone to hold them.
In March a stranger came up the track with a dog and a sack of letters, and one of them had a red seal and a stamp from Lerwick. The man could not read it, so he gave it to the woman at the door. Inside was a single line in pencil: the mitten you sent with him kept his hand warm when the ice came in, and he says to tell you the red heart on the thumb was the only colour he saw for a month.
That evening Maud went to the needles and found the right mitten gone. She had sent only one, and had never known why she kept knitting its twin. She sat down on the step and laughed until the dog came to lick her face. Then she cast on again, because the cuff was the part that needed the most care.
